A major new survey of American attitudes to online copyright infringement has found that 70 percent of all 18 to 29-year-olds have pirated music, TV shows, or movies. But almost no Americans are hardcore grog-swillers, and two-thirds of those who do acquire copyrighted material without permission also acquire content legally.
The new research comes courtesy of a forthcoming report called Copy Culture in the US and Germany, and it was done by some of the same researchers who worked on the groundbreaking Media Piracy in Emerging Economies report earlier this year. Data comes from a Princeton Survey Research Associates telephone poll of 2,303 American adults during the month of August; a Google grant funded some of the research.
The poll found that 46 percent of all Americans have engaged in piracy, but that young people skew the numbers significantly. And while it found that piracy is common, it also found that most is relatively casual. Only 2 percent of Americans are “heavy music pirates” with more than 1,000 tracks of infringing music; only 1 percent of Americans are heavy TV/movie pirates with more than 100 infringing shows or films.
For most people, downloading music and video goes hand-in-hand with acquiring it legally; less than one-third of admitted pirates copped to owning an entire collection of illicit material. And large numbers of pirates have already altered their behavior in response to more attractive legal services for acquiring content.
When it comes to music, 46 percent of American pirates said that they grab unauthorized music less than they used to thanks to legal streaming services (and the survey was done before Spotify launched in the US). For video, 40 percent of pirates have already curtailed their activity thanks to legal alternatives like Netflix.
As for video game pirates, they're negligible. Only 3 percent of homes with game consoles have machines modified to accept pirated discs.
Apparently, by a study that was conducted we are all pirates. They show that young people pirate more than everyone else. 70% of the survey was young people and most of them have enough downloaded for it to get them into trouble.
It's official: America a land of young, casual pirates

Texting Gloves
A company called "Gold Medal" has come up with the design for gloves that allow you to text while wearing them. They are called "Texting Gloves" and you can get these gloves online and in some stores. There are all kinds of styles and designs.
The world is just getting more into being lazy by making gloves that allow u to text while wearing them. I can't see why someone would go out and buy these gloves to text with.

Triumph of the Nerds
Triumph of the nerds shows how the personal computer got its start from just being a box with several circuit boards and switches to Apple becoming a company and build the first computers. Seeing all of these guys get together in a club called homebrew was very interesting to me because it showed how everything got its start.
Going back to when the first personal computers were built and seeing how the computer has advanced over time. Seeing how everything started and seeing why they all got into doing what they do was good can't wait to see the rest of the movie.

Stupid Geek Tricks: Randomly Rename Every File in a Directory
UPDATE: An “undo” function has been added to the script. There are comments in the batch script which explain how to use this.
Looking to have a little fun with your files or play a clever prank on someone? With a simple batch script you can randomly rename every file in a directory instantly.
Just copy our RandomNames.bat script into a folder and run it.
Uses
While it may not be immediately obvious, there are several somewhat practical uses for this:
Easily bulk rename picture files to randomize the order they appear in slideshows or on digital picture frames.
A practical joke (see the warning below).
In case the “random” button on your MP3 player isn’t geeky enough for you.
Options
There are a couple of options you can configure in the script:
Prepend the file names – instead of renaming the entire file, a random string is added to the beginning of each file name.
Undo renaming -
You can set these options by opening the RandomNames.bat file in Notepad and editing accordingly. There are comments included to let you know how to set each option.
Warning!
When the script runs, it warns you that deleting the created translation file (__Translation.txt) will prevent you from being able to undo the renaming.
Needless to say, it would be a good idea to backup your original files before renaming them all.
Use responsibly and have fun!
How to geek is now teaching how to change all the names of the files in your directory to a random name. Some people might use this batch file to mess with people over the internet.

Need an instant WiFi hotspot? Here's how
From time to time you might run into a situation where you have a computer connected to the internet (maybe via Ethernet), and you have a device you want to connect to the internet as well, except there is no WiFi hotspot to connect to. I was in a situation like this today, so I simply created a hotspot using a nifty app called Connectify.
As long as your computer is running Windows 7 and connected to the internet via some form, whether that is via WiFi, Ethernet or even a 3G/4G dongle, you can use Connectify to share that same connection through a new WiFi hotspot. It’s really simple to set-up and allows any device to connect via secure WPA2-PSK.
All you need to do is download the application here, install it while making sure your antivirus software doesn’t prohibit the installation (ESET Smart Security, for example, prohibited the service from starting), then run the app. From here you simply need to choose a hotspot name and password, choose the incoming network you want to share and through which WiFi card you have in your computer, then click start hotspot.
They have found a way you can create your very own wifi connection without having to pay for your own. You can steal someone else's internet to create your own. If people start doing this then the connection will be slow and not well trusted.

iPhone 4S Has Been Jailbroken By Dev-Team, Public Release Still Far Away
Unless their chipset has already been exploited and jailbroken on a previous device, it takes a lot of time for the iOS jailbreaking community to come with a jailbreak for a new iOS device. The iPhone 4S and iPad 2, both of which are based on a still (bootrom) unexploited dual-core A5 chip, haven’t received a jailbreak for iOS 5 yet, but it appears that they’ll be getting one soon.
The news comes directly from MuscleNerd – famous iPhone hacker and member of the iPhone Dev Team – in the form of a tweet in which he shares a screenshot of a jailbroken iPhone 4S on iOS 5.
From Twitter:
VERY preliminary 4S JB: twitpic.com/76vcp4 twitpic.com/76vct2 (Huge missing pieces prevent public release. LOTS of work left)
As you can see from MuscleNerd’s tweet, the jailbreak is “very preliminary” and is still some time away from a public release. There are no ETAs for this so we expect you all to show a little patience and let the Dev Team do their work.
Although we believe him completely, the two photos that MuscleNerd shared in his tweet verify his claim of the iPhone 4S jailbreak. The first screenshot shows root access on the iPhone 4S (codenamed N94) on iOS 5 whereas the second screenshot shows Cydia 1.1.1 running on iPhone 4,1 (which is another name for the 4S) with a Siri prompt at the bottom.
The iPhone 4S jailbreak is gonna be big when it is released. iPhone and iPad users all like being able to change things on their devices to the way they want and when the jailbreak hits for these devices you are gonna see a big upraor for the demand for jailbreaking.
